The Scottish Ambulance Service utilises a dispatch system that will suggest the closest hospital in relation to the incident. However, it is the attending crew’s own decision making and knowledge which dictates where a patient is taken. There can be specific warnings/flags on patient details in a system; whereby a person is known to have a specific illness/treatment plan and needs to go to a specific hospital.
The KA12 postcode is captured in the receiving A&E department of the University Crosshouse Hospital. In a standard 999 call from this postcode, with no other information regarding the patient’s medical conditions, this is where the crew would transport a patient to. If the crew had further information from the Ambulance Control Centre regarding a patient's health directive or information from another health professional, this may change the receiving hospital.
